Reduce before you substitute

The largest gains usually come from using less material: right sizing the box to the product, removing an unnecessary outer sleeve, or replacing a thick insert with a well engineered card platform. Less material also lowers freight volume.

Material options to discuss with your supplier

• Recycled greyboard for the structural layer
• Certified paper wraps from responsibly managed sources
• Paper based inserts instead of plastic foam where the product allows
• Water based or paper friendly coatings instead of heavy plastic lamination
• Paper tapes and paper based void fill for shipping

Each has trade offs. Uncoated recycled surfaces mark more easily; paper inserts may not suit heavy irregular items. Test with your actual product before committing.

Design for a second life

A box that is kept is a box that is not discarded. Storage friendly structures, neutral interiors and durable closures extend usefulness. In gifting, reuse is often the strongest sustainability outcome available.

Recyclability in practice

Mixed materials are the main obstacle. A paper box with a bonded plastic laminate, foam insert and metal magnet is difficult to separate. If recyclability is a goal, reduce the number of different materials before adding claims.

Communicate honestly

• Describe what is verifiable, such as the specific certification held for a material
• Avoid broad claims that cannot be substantiated
• Keep on pack messaging factual and short

• Is the box larger than it needs to be
• Can any component be removed entirely
• How many different materials does the finished box contain
• Would the customer plausibly keep or reuse it
